Critical Care Providers Should Know

According to the United Health Foundation, the state of Texas is the sixth least healthy state in the nation. There are a large number of health issues and concerns which are affecting the citizens of Texas. Compared to the rest of the country, Texas has a large percentage of people who are diabetic, who have an infectious disease, who are obese, and who have high cholesterol. Despite all of these health problems, there are a couple of health areas in which the state of Texas is performing better than the national average; there are a comparatively low number of people who smoke, and a low percentage of people who have or had cancer.

  • 17.4% of the adults in Texas reported fair to poor health
  • 15.8% of the population of Texas smoke
  • 31.7% of adults in Texas are obese
  • 9.7% of the adult population of Texas have diabetes
  • 29.1% of the adults in Texas have high blood pressure
  • 40.8% of the adult population of Texas have high cholesterol
  • The average life expectancy in Texas is 78.27 years

Due to its size and location the state of Texas has to contend with many natural disasters. Each year, the Texas Department of Health tries to educate its citizens on what to do in the event of a hurricane, a fire, or a tornado. By educating its residents, Texas believes that it can save lives because the people will be better prepared for any kind of situation. Part of that education includes making sure residents know when they need to evacuate and when they should stay put. Texas has many different hotlines and websites set up for people to check what they are supposed to do in a natural disaster or emergency.
