State Statistics Critical Care Providers Should Know
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in New Mexico. In 2009 Heart Disease accounted for 20.5% of all deaths, followed by Malignant Neoplasms at 20.4%, and Accidents (Unintentional Injuries) at 8.0%.
Since 2000, for the most part, the death rates for Malignant Neoplasms declined while the death rates for Heart Disease and Accidents increased. The rate increases for Heart Disease and Cancer from 2006 to 2007 were primarily due to the methodology change for estimating populations.
Unintentional Injuries (Accidents) accounted for 5.1% of all deaths in the United States in 2007 and 8.0% of New Mexico deaths in 2009.
Among deaths from Unintentional Injuries (Figure M-8), the death rates for motor vehicle crash injuries decreased. The rates for falls and poisoning have shown an increasing trend since 2000. Much of the increase (47.7%) in the death rate from 2000 to 2009 for unintentional poisoning is the result of prescription drug overdose. The increase in falls deaths is largely attributable to an aging state population.
New Mexico's 2009 age-adjusted death rate for alcohol-induced deaths (18.8) was higher than the 2007 rate for the United States (7.3). New Mexico's rate for drug-induced deaths (20.5) was higher than the U.S. rate (12.6).
