New Hampshire Info

New Hampshire is located in the northeastern portion of the country.  It is considered to be a part of New England and one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against the rule of the British during the American Revolution.  New Hampshire became a state in 1629 based on the ground that had been an established colony for many years.  The region was named New Hampshire after a county in England that went by the name Hampshire.

The state was first settled in 1623, just a few years after the initial pilgrims arrived at Plymouth.  The settlers quickly built a manor house along with a fort and several other buildings.  In 1776, New Hampshire was the first colony to set up its own government independent of British rule.  It devised a constitution of its own as well, but it was not actually the first colony to gain or declare independence.

In the 1800s, the state helped lead the charge against slavery and became a strong advocate of abolition.  After World War II, the region saw an increase in its economy and culture.  The region became linked with Boston in Massachusetts and the metropolitan areas of the two became connected through major highways.

For visitors, New Hampshire is a very entertaining destination.  The state truly has something for everyone with historical sites and museums as well as nature centers and scenic views.  Portsmouth has the Strawbery Banke Museum with numerous buildings and outdoor areas that trace the history of the town while North Conway is home to the best children's museum in the region.

Concord holds the oldest state capitol building in the country as well as many other old buildings and homes.  The Pierce Manse is a Greek Revival home that was once owned by Franklin Pierce, a former president.  The city also has the Kimball-Jenkins Estate, which is a mansion formerly owned by the Concord family.

New Hampshire has enough beauty along with plenty of outdoor recreational activities, historic sites, and cultural wonders to keep any traveler busy during their time in the area.
