Originally founded in 1821, Indianapolis is currently the capital of the state of Indiana. It is also the largest city currently in the state, but it is not one of the biggest U.S. tourist destinations. It is most known today for the professional car racing industry, which holds major races at local speedways each year.
For those drawn in by professional racing, there is nowhere better than the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The city also hosts other sporting events, though they tend to be more on the amateur side drawing in a more limited selection of visitors.
Those who do come to Indianapolis tend to steer toward the wide array of museums for entertainment. From a top notch children's museum that families enjoy to the popular Museum of American Indians and Western Art, there is something for everyone as the exhibits are located throughout the city.
There are also some state parks which were designed to preserver some access to natural landscapes for the locals in the industrial heyday of the city. Visitors now enjoy these areas just as much as the locals as a place to relax and enjoy nature.
Yet, most Indianapolis visitors still tend to be drawn in by the allure of the Nascar racing industry.
