About Houston

Originally founded in 1836, Houston has a hot, humid climate and thriving arts and entertainment community that attract visitors from near and far all year round. Since the winters tend to be mild and much warmer than other areas of the United States, many visitors will visit Houston as an escape from the snow and ice.

The most notable feature about this city is the diversified population. This is definitely a melting pot community with a variety of races, nationalities, and religions mixed together. For this reason, the well known "museum district" attracts a regular flow of tourists who are interested in historical and cultural displays.

Outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers also come to this city to enjoy the many public parks, such as the popular Memorial Park. This park offers a nice golf course and long, winding trails that go along the bayou. Another family-friendly destination is the Houston Space Center. This is basically a museum environment with some films and other entertainments that teach about the history of space travel.

Those interested in art also flock to Houston, often spending days at the Museum of Fine Arts and other museums filled with some of the world's finest masterpieces.

Located in the southern region of the country, Houston is also known for its southwestern activities and climate. Many locals as well as visitors enjoy typical southwestern amusements, such as attending the rodeo, horseback riding, and go to livestock shows.

Yet, you cannot classify Texas as whole or Houston specifically as a typical southern environment. Today, it contains a mix of people with very diverse backgrounds and the amusements offered cover everything from outdoor excursions to theater, art, and the amazing underwater display at the Downtown Aquarium.
