October 4, 2012 - Beta Blockers Side Effects May Outweigh Benefits - Beta blockers are easy-to-access heart drugs that are meant to slow the heart beat and lower blood pressure. There are some annoying side effects, however, and many patients are needlessly exposing themselves to these side effects. Whether beta blockers can keep heart attacks at bay is still up for debate. As a general rule of thumb, only take medication if you absolutely need it. A better path is to eat healthy and exercise. October 1, 2012 - Lack of Sleep in Teenagers may Indicate Future Heart Disease - A recent study shows that teenagers who don’t get enough sleep are more at risk of heart disease later in life. Out of the 4,100 teenagers that the researchers studied, they found that those with the least amount of sleep were more likely to be obese and experience high blood pressure and high cholesterol. September 25, 2012 - War Against Sugary Drinks Continues - A recent study sheds new light on the role that sugary drinks such as soda play in the obesity epidemic. While many suspected the connection, this study provides one of the most robust arguments that sugary drinks is directly linked to obesity. September 24, 2012 - New York Votes to Ban High Sugar Drinks - In the first sweeping decision of its kind, New York City health official voted to ban large-sized sugary drinks from restaurants, street vendors, movie theaters and more. This is a first step New York City’s attempt to curb obesity. While this measure is sure to draw national attention and a measure of controversy, it remains to be seen how effective such a law will be. September 13, 2012 - Is it Possible to Exercise too Much? - The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article that warns about the dangers of obsessive exercise. Overindulgence can lead to serious health issues like loss of sleep, depression, muscle soreness and decreased immune function. While it is good to work out regularly, more isn’t always better.
